the 5 Villages of Cinque Terre
Along a part of the jagged Ligurian coast there are ancient seaside villages, characterized by colored houses overlooking the sea that seem to come out of a painting by a painter. All enclosed by the embrace of the numerous vineyards clinging to the steep terraces created on the hills. We are talking about the splendid and picturesque Cinque Terre, five villages which remained completely isolated until the construction of the railway in 1874.
Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are the names of these splendid and characteristic villages which follow one another from north to south within a radius of about 15 kilometres. We are in an area where man, for once, has been able to establish a magnificent interaction with nature and for this reason, since 1997, it has been included among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, together with Porto Venere and the Palmaria islands , Tino and Tinetto. In 1998 the Cinque Terre Marine Protected Area was established, while in 1999 the Cinque Terre National Park was established, aimed at protecting the environment, the landscape, the ecological balance and the values
When to go to Cinque TerreThe Cinque Terre can generally be visited throughout the year, as the climate is quite mild even in the winter, albeit rainy. We advise you to choose a low season, perhaps in early spring or autumn, when the tourist flow is much lower than in the high season and holidays. Having the villages and paths almost all to yourself is the best way to fully experience the Cinque Terre, serenely and with the peace and calm that these places can offer.
The only moments in which it is worth visiting the Cinque Terre during the high season or holidays are the following events:
☀ Largest Living Nativity Scene in the World in Manarola: it takes place during the Christmas period, usually from 8 December to mid-January. The idea comes from Mario Andreoli who since 1976 has created more than 300 life-size characters, made with more than 8 kilometers of cables and illuminated by 17,000 light bulbs.
☀ Underwater Christmas in Vernazza: celebrated on December 25th. During the festival, the divers bring the statue of the Child Jesus to the surface, which is then transported to the church.
☀ Lemon Festival in Monterosso: takes place on the third Saturday of May. During this festival the village will turn yellow and smell of citrus. For the occasion, gastronomic kiosks will be set up where you will find cakes with lemon cream, jams, lemonades, limoncino and many other typical lemon-based products of the area.
☀ Corpus Domini and Infiorata in Monterosso: usually takes place in June. During the event a wonderful and colorful carpet of flowers is created on which the solemn procession of Corpus Domini will pass.anthropological.https://www.unviaggioinfiniteemozioni.it/cosa-vedere-fare-cinque-terre/
